Can I install an IGE indoors?
The Island Gourmet Elite is certified for use in indoor installations. This applies to models built from November 2023 onwards only. Anything before this can still only be used outdoors. If you're unsure whether yours is suitable for indoor use or not, if it has a laser-etched trim with a 5-digit serial number, you're good to go.
There are a few requirements to keep in mind when installing indoors such as...
- Indoor use is only certified on fixed connections i.e. Natural Gas or reticulated LPG. LPG gas bottles are not able to be used indoors.
- All indoor installations are required to be installed and certified by an authorised gas fitter.
- All vertical combustible surfaces above the countertop have a clearance of 130mm to the edge of the appliance.
- All overhead surfaces and range hoods must be higher than 600mm, 750mm for extraction fans, and 1200mm for combustible materials, measured from the barbecue plate.
Please consult the instruction manual on the "Downloads" tab for more information, as well as your gas fitter for technical advice.
Heatlie is unable to consult on whether your outdoor area is suitable, or the specifications of range hoods. We are only able to supply the information you see above and what is detailed in the instruction manual. We suggest talking to a gas fitter or your local technical regulator for more details and information.
The Island Gourmet Elite is certified against standard AS/NZS 5263.1.1-2020 & AS/NZS 5263.0-2017 - Amdt 1
Can I install my IGE in combustible materials?
Yes! The IGE is approved for installation in both non-combustible and combustible materials. This covers both the benchtop and the cabinets beneath. This is possible because of a zero clearance layer around the firebox.
Combustible materials include MDF, wood, laminex etc. Non-combustible materials include stone, granite, brick, cement etc.
What is the Island Gourmet Elite cooking plate made from?
The IGE plate comes in either mild steel or stainless steel. We recommend mild steel as it conducts heat better than stainless steel. Both products will need to be seasoned, similar to a wok, and this will stop any food from sticking to the plate whilst stopping the plate from rusting. Even the stainless steel plate will go black and will rust, due to the grade of stainless steel used for this purpose.

Why has my hotplate discoloured?
Whether you have a mild or stainless steel cooking plate, this is a normal occurrence after a period of time and should be no cause for concern as it will provide a better cooking surface.
Do I need to season the plate?
Seasoning the plate will stop food from sticking and give you a better cooking surface, protecting the steel from corrosion. See our guide to seasoning your BBQ plate here.
Why is my BBQ plate hotter on the left hand side?
This is typical with gas BBQs as the gas will build up towards the far end of the burner, resulting in a higher flame on this end. There is little you can do to stop this. We recommend using it to your advantage by cooking foods that require high temps in this spot and cycling food around the plate as you cook.
How do I clean out the fat drip?
The fat drip is found under the plate at the front of the IGE. You will notice a hole in the plate at the front. Use your plate lifting hook to lift the plate up from this hole. Then simply slide the container out from its brace.
Why does my grill plate wobble?
Due to the pressure applied to the metal during laser cutting and welding, the grill plates can sometimes wobble slightly when sitting in the cradle. The good news is, this will clear up as you continue to use the IGE. Applying heat to the plate relaxes the tension and helps it settle into an even position.
My IGE won't light?
Gas supply problem
- Turn the knob slowly prior to ignitor clicking so gas has time to enter the burner
- Check cylinder valve is open
- Check gas bottle is not empty
- Check hose is connected at the fitting
- Check natural gas line is functional and turned on
The electrode is too far away from the burner
- Electrode wire needs to be 3-5mm away from the burner and directly over an open slot
LCC 27 Regulator safety switch
Performing a reset of the regulator.
Due to the new safety shut off feature, we've noticed a few issues regarding low flames on BBQs. This can happen if the BBQ is not shut down properly. Once you've finished cooking, you must turn the BBQ off at the knobs first, then turn the gas bottle off. If done in reverse, or if you don't turn your knobs off at all, it can lead to problems the next time you go to light the BBQ. If this happens, it may appear as though the flame is on low, despite your knob being on high. To fix this, simply reset your regulator by following these steps.
- Turn your BBQ knobs to off position
- Turn gas bottle off
- Completely unscrew hose fitting from bottle
- Turn knobs on to clear lines of gas
- Return back to off position
- Screw hose fitting back onto bottle
- Turn on bottle
- Light BBQ as normal
The crucial part to remember is that the knobs needs to always be returned to the off position once you finish cooking. We do not recommend leaving your knobs in the on position at all times.
The electrode is not sparking
- Ensure leads are securely connected
- Ensure there is a clear path between the electrode tip and the burner for it to arc to. These burner slots can become clogged with muck, fat, dust and dirt, especially on grill-plated models.
My IGE lights but does not stay on.
Gas control valve problem
- Ensure the knob turns freely
The thermocouple is not positioned properly
- The thermocouple needs to be positioned in the flame, 3-5mm above the burner slots
Why is my flame low, excessively yellow and/or depositing soot on the underside of the plate?
Gas supply problem
- Low pressure may result from the gas cylinder being close to empty, change to a full gas cylinder
Blocked burners
- Clean burners by blowing high-pressure air through the burner or with a wire brush
- Inspect the gas valve for blockage caused by insects or spiders.
Burner flame is starved of air
- Ensure IGE is ventilated properly and operating in a suitable area
Why am I having trouble lighting my Island Gourmet?
This is generally due to trying to light the IGE incorrectly i.e. turning the knob too quickly and letting go too quickly. The knob needs to be held down for a sufficient enough time for gas to flow through the burner, so that when the electrode sparks, there is gas to light. The flame failure will also kick in if the thermocouple is not given enough time to appropriately detect the flame.
If you're having trouble, try slowing everything down and drawing the process out in a deliberate and careful manner.
Electrode Placement
If your gas is flowing but you are not getting a spark from your electrode, the placement of the electrode could be hindering the spark. The tip of the electrode needs to be 3-5mm away, directly over an open slot in the burner.
As we manufacture the IGE we always take care to make sure the electrode is in its correct place and we ensure this by testing each and every IGE before they leave us. The IGE will not be packaged unless we know it works.
Sometimes the electrode can get knocked in transport, or potentially during installation, set up, cleaning and maintenance. Even if only by 1 or 2mm, this can make a difference.
Gas Supply
It's important to make sure that you have ordered the correct gas type for your installation. LPG and natural gas IGEs have several differences and the gas types are not interchangeable.
If you have a reticulated LPG gas supply that is plumbed into your home, which is common in rural areas or areas without natural gas, this will require an LPG-compatible IGE. This will also require a new bayonet hose fitting that Heatlie is unable to supply. This will need to be fitted by a qualified and licensed gas fitter post-purchase.
If you try to run a natural gas BBQ on a reticulated LPG supply this will result in far too much gas flowing through to the burners leading to overheating.
Ventilation
You need to ensure you have ventilation in the cabinet so that air can be drawn in for the flame to light. The IGE instruction manual states that the IGE needs 400cm2 of open ventilation through the cabinet. This is compulsory and the warranty is dependent on it.
