Can I purchase direct from Heatlie? 10. Do you custom make BBQ's to my specifications? When the barbeque is manufactured a light coat of lanolin is used to protect the plate from rust. This needs to be removed before the bbq is used. Follow these simple instructions to ensure your bbq is cleaned and seasoned before its first use: 1. Using hot, soapy water and a sponge, wash the hotplate 2 or 3 times or until the water becomes clear. Rinse with clean water. 2. Touch the dry plate with your hand - the plate should not feel tacky. If it does feel tacky, some lanolin remains and a further wash is necessary. 3. Coat the plate with a light application of cooking oil - vegetable or olive oil for example. 4. Light the bbq according to the instructions and turn both burners to high. 5. Heat for 2-3 minutes. Turn the BBQ off. 6. Wipe the oil from the hotplate. 7. Re-apply another thin layer of oil. You are now ready to cook. Yes - both the stainless steel and mild steel Heatlie bbq plates will go black. A mild steel plate should be black all over, apart fom a small strip down the right hand side over the plate, which is over the top of the burners. Stainless steel does not conduct heat as well as mild steel, so a stainless steel plate will go black over the burners only. This means that the stainless steel plate will not be hot all over either. The plates can be cleaned and polished, particularly the stainless steel, to keep the shiny look, but this needs to be carried out after every use. This will also take the oil off the plate, so there will be a greater risk of rust on the plate. We recommend a light coat of oil be left on the plate to protect from this. 3. What are the advantages of purchasing a stainless steel plate? Many chefs prefer cooking on a stainless steel hotplate as they believe metal is not leached from the plate into the food. This can occur with other metals, such as aluminium and cast iron leaving a metallic taste in the food which is cooked on the plate. Chefs also prefer stainless steel for the ease of cleaning and the shiny look. However, this shine will only be retained with constant cleaning and scrubbing. A lot of elbow grease will be required to keep your hotplate shiny and looking like new.
Discolouration of your Heatlie stainless steel hotplate. Discolouration of the Heatlie stainless steel hotplate is normal. Stainless steel is a poor conductor of heat and therefore the hottest part of your plate will be directly above the burners. This will be visible by the discolouration of the plate in this area, as the photograph below illustrates. This plate is made of 3CR12 which is a grade of stainless steel suited to this purpose as it is the “best” conductor of heat, although not as good a conductor as mild steel. This 3CR12 plate is magnetic. It is composed of 12 to 18% chrome, no nickel and a low carbon content, and is termed “ferritic”. It has a fair to good corrosion resistance. Compare this to 304 and 316 stainless steel , which we use in other products including the body of the Heatlie stainless steel bbq. The 304 and 316 stainless steel products are termed “austenitic” and are nonmagnetic. They are composed of 18% chrome and 8% nickel, and no carbon, making their heat dispersion and transfer properties poor. These grades of stainless steel have excellent corrosion resistance, cleanability and hygiene properties, but are also at the upper end of the pricing scale.
How to clean your Heatlie stainless steel hotplate. Heatlie recommend you scrape your stainless steel hotplate clean with a wall paper scraper after each use. We DO NOT recommend scrubbing down after each use to make the plate shiny, as the fat or oil residue protects the plate against corrosion and, as explained in the above section, this plate has reasonable heat transfer properties, but does not have as good resistance to corrosion as 316 grade stainless steel would. Heatlie recognize that many of our customers purchase a stainless steel plate with the expectation of maintaining the “shiny new look”. This can be achieved though thorough cleaning and scrubbing, after each use, with a scourer. Noncaustic cleaning products, such as “Glitz”, available from Bunnings or “Grease Lightening” available at bbq and hardware stores, can be used. Also, buffing back the plate to its original glory is an option, but this should preferably be a job undertaken by a skilled tradesman.
Benefits of a Heatlie Stainless Steel Hotplate Answers to Misconceptions
4. Can I purchase spare parts for my Heatlie BBQ? Yes - spare parts are available for all current models, and some older models as well. We will only supply spare parts for AGA approved models, so there are some old products which will not be available. 5. What is the difference between a 5mm and 10mm mild steel plate? For all commercial applications, we recommend a 10mm plate. This plate will hold a greater amount of heat and will not warp. 5mm plates may warp if the bbq is left burning for 2 or 3 minutes without food on the plate. The 10mm plate is fabulous for cooking steak! 6. Are all plates made from stainless steel? Most Heatlie BBQs are manufactured with a 5mm mild steel plate. Customers can order a stainless steel plate in 6mm or 100mm thickness. These are ordered from time to time, but are less popular than the mild steel version. Read FAQ (3) above for further information on the benefits, or otherwise, of stainless steel plates. Heatlie BBQs come in 2 colours, black or claret. These bbqs are made from mild steel and have a power coated finish. A stainless steel model is available also. 8. Can my Heatlie bbq be converted to Natural Gas? Yes - your bbq can be converted to Natural Gas. All components can be purchased from Heatlie and we recommend this be installed by a qualified gas fitter. 9. Can I purchase direct from Heatlie? We do not sell direct to the public. For further information on becoming a Heatlie reseller please contact us. (LINK TO WHERE TO BUY*****) |
